Our Story
Some missions don't end when you come home.
I spent years serving in the United States Air Force as a combat veteran, doing the work that most people never see and carrying the weight that never fully leaves you. When my service ended, I came home to Michigan — to my wife, my three sons, our golden retriever, and a backyard that had no idea what it was about to become.
Re-entry into civilian life is something they don't fully prepare you for. The structure disappears. The purpose gets foggy. The identity you built over years of service doesn't have an obvious place to land in a world that's moved on without you. I struggled with that transition more than I expected — and more than I let on. The noise of everyday life felt loud in ways that were hard to explain to people who hadn't lived the quiet of a deployment or the intensity of combat. Simple things felt complicated. Big things felt impossible.
What helped — more than anything else — was going outside.
Not hiking a mountain or running a race. Just being outside. Sitting by a fire in the backyard with my wife after the boys went to bed. Cooking something slow on the grill on a Saturday afternoon. Playing cornhole until it got too dark to see the boards. Watching my dog tear across the grass like the world was made just for him. Those moments didn't fix everything. But they reminded me what I was fighting for when I was overseas, and they gave me something to come back to every single day.
The backyard became my therapy. My reset. My sanctuary.
The more I leaned into it, the more I realized I wasn't alone. Veterans across the country — and honestly, people everywhere — are rediscovering what it means to slow down, step outside, and actually be present with the people they love. We've built lives at full speed and forgotten how to inhabit them. The backyard is one of the last places where that can change.
That's why I built GetBackyarding.
It started as a dream — the kind you quietly carry for years before you finally decide to stop waiting for the right moment and just start. Building a business as a disabled veteran comes with its own set of challenges. There are days the body doesn't cooperate. Days the mind races back to places you'd rather not go. Days when imposter syndrome whispers that someone like you doesn't get to do something like this. I've had all of those days. I still do.
But I also have a backyard. And a fire. And a family that shows up around it.
Get Backyarding is a carefully curated collection of American-made and premium outdoor products chosen for one purpose: to help you build more of those moments. Not picture-perfect Instagram moments — real ones. Loud ones, messy ones, the kind where the food burns a little and nobody cares because the conversation is too good to stop. The kind you'll remember in twenty years.
We believe that being intentional about your time outside — who you spend it with, how you spend it, what you build around it — is one of the most important things a person can do. For their family. For their health. For their soul.
And because this brand was born from service, it gives back to service. A portion of every purchase supports organizations dedicated to helping combat veterans heal, reconnect, and rediscover their purpose through the power of the outdoors. Because the transition home shouldn't be fought alone — and because the backyard that saved me might just save someone else too.
So whether you're a veteran building your way back, a parent trying to put the phones down and get the kids outside, or just someone who knows deep down that the best moments of your life have happened around a fire — this brand is for you.
Welcome to GetBackyarding.
Live intentionally. For the backyard. For the brave.
